Freestanding Handstand
The Freestanding Handstand (OG Level 5) is the foundational inverted balance skill of calisthenics, requiring stacked 180° shoulder flexion, full scapular elevation, posterior pelvic tilt, and continuous finger-flexor balance corrections. Rather than counterbalancing with an arched lower back, a gymnastic handstand stacks wrists, shoulders, ribs, hips, knees, and ankles into a single vertical plumb line.

Step-by-Step Biomechanical Execution
Cambered Hand Placement
Place hands shoulder-width apart with fingers spread and slightly flexed ('cambered') to grip the floor.
Controlled Scissor Kick-Up
Shift shoulders over the knuckles and kick up smoothly into a stacked vertical line.
Finger & Heel-of-Palm Rebalancing
Press fingertips down to correct falling toward the back of the hands (over-balance) and shift weight to the heel of the palm for under-balance.
Primary & Secondary Muscles
Primary Prime Movers
Secondary Stabilizers
Technical Coaching Cues
- Push tall through the shoulders to eliminate any gap between upper arms and ears
- Tuck lower ribs in and squeeze glutes at 40% tension
Common Biomechanical Mistakes & Energy Leaks
Avoid these structural faults to protect tendons and qualify for strict hold/rep standards.
Correction: Keep index and middle knuckles slightly tented so fingertips press actively into the floor.
